CMS Extends Attestation Deadline for EPs until March 31, 2014

CMS is extending the deadline for eligible professionals to attest to meaningful use from 11:59 pm ET on February 28, 2014 to 11:59 pm ET March 31, 2014.

EPs will have until the end of March to attest for the Medicare EHR Incentive Program 2013 reporting year.

CMS states that “This extension will allow more time for providers to submit their meaningful use data and receive an incentive payment for the 2013 program year, as well as avoid the 2015 payment adjustment.”

CMS reminds Medicaid EPs that “This extension does not impact the deadlines for the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program or any other CMS program, including the electronic submission for the Physician Quality Reporting System EHR Incentive Program Pilot. “

Windows XP in the Healthcare Industry

If you are using Windows XP and are in the healthcare industry, it is time to make changes to avoid non-compliance and liability.  As of April 8, 2014 the extended support for Windows XP comes to a final end.  This means that there will be no more releases of any security patches or updates.  This will make Windows XP non-compliant with HIPAA.

§164.312(e) “Standard: Transmission security. Implement technical security measures to guard against unauthorized access to electronic protected health information that is being transmitted over an electronic communications network.”

If any of your business computers are still running Windows XP, Allstate IT Solutions can help you implement the necessary changes before April 8, 2014.
